This list is provided as a preliminary guide to some examples of the systematic data, databases and systematic tools currently available on the internet. It is not exhaustive, but instead is intended to provide access to some additional sites that conform to the spirit of the PEET program in making systematic/taxonomic data available in electronic format, and to the tools that make that possible.

Systematic Data/Databases/ Information

• The Integrated Taxonomic Information System -- an "on-line, scientifically credible, list of biological names focusing on the biota of North America"

• Beetles of the Virgin Islands - A searchable database of collection, distribution and summary information for beetles of the Virgin Islands.

• Checklist of Extant Mecoptera species -- with photographs, descriptions and information about distribution and diversity of many higher taxa.

• FusKey -- An interactive key to 30 common species of the hyphomycete fungusFusarium.

• Neogene Marine Invertebrates of Tropical America -- contains images and information about taxa collected as part of two large multi-taxa fossil sampling programs: Panama Paleontology Project; Dominican Republic Project. Includes searchable on-line databases of taxa, authors, synonyms, morphology, types, type specimens, and spatial and temporal distribution. The site also includes interactive keys to zooxanthellate coral genera.

• Taxonomic Catalogs of Hymenoptera -- searchable database of www catalogs and information about hymenopteran taxa.

• The Tree-of-Life is a multiauthored, dispersed project that contains information about the phylogenetic relationships and characteristics of organisms and illustrates the diversity and unity of all living organisms.

Systematic/ Taxonomic Data Management/Analysis Tools

• DELTA - DEscription Language for TAxonomy -- A flexible method for encoding taxonomic descriptive data for computer processing. DELTA-format data can be used to produce natural-language descriptions, keys, classifications, and interactive identification systems. Includes examples of DELTA-format databases and taxonomic products.

• NaviKey is a Java applet which has been developed to provide a web interface for DELTA files.

• TreeBASE is a pilot project sponsored by the NSF, Harvard University Herbaria, and the University of California, Davis to establish a relational database of phylogenetic information.

• LUCID - interactive key system -- A software tool for developing interactive identification aids for teachers, taxonomists and ecologists.
