A few words about the BBQ:

Many overseas visitors and more than a few U.S. citizens never get a chance to see much of the inland mid-continent region of the U.S. (a.k.a. Midwest, “Heartland”), and if they do, the exposure is primarily to the urban centers.  However, for over a century and a half this agrarian region was not only the breadbasket of the continent, but also one of the cultural keys to how the country defined itself.  The family farm (or ranch) was the basic economic and social unit for most of the region – and like many keystone taxa, it is now endangered and facing extinction under the economic pressures of industrial agriculture.

The Douglas County area around Lawrence provides an interesting and somewhat hopeful example of social evolution and preservation.  The growing demand for fresh, wholesome, locally produced food by the urban and suburban populations has provided both a market niche and community relationships for the local farmers.  We’ve tried to use this update of the traditional rural Midwestern picnic to let you experience some of the people, products, and lifestyles of the region.  (OK, we have to admit it – we don’t kill a bison for most of our routine picnics – that’s special for the visitors.)

Karen and John Pendleton will be around to talk about their operation and open the shop if people want to browse or buy.  Feel free to talk to Joe Markley as long as you don’t distract him from the cooking.  Al Macfarlane and Jim Jeans will be providing some traditional American music derived from Celtic and other European music to round out the experience.

Map and driving directions

Pendleton's Country Market is located in the Kansas River Valley,

3 miles east of Lawrence, Kansas, and 20 minutes west of the western edge of Kansas City.

How to Get to the Farm

We suggest that customers take Hwy 10 to Douglas County Rd. 1057(also called E. 1900 Rd.). Turn north and go 1⁄2 mile on 1057 (E 1900), then turn left and go 1⁄2 mile west on Douglas County Rd. 442, then turn right and go 1⁄2 miles north on 1850 E. Rd.

If coming from Lawrence or points west, it may be easiest to start at 15th and Massachusetts in Lawrence. From 15th and Massachusetts, go 4 1⁄2 miles east on 15th street to 1850 E. Rd., and then turn right and go 1⁄2 mile south to our farm.
